Ohio Chem-Dry Franchise Owners: Love The Income, Love The Schedule
More time for a growing family and the ability to control their financial destiny led this couple to explore owning a floor cleaning franchise
When Erin and Leroy Hamp decided to open a Chem-Dry carpet cleaning franchise a few years ago, they were truly a “No experience? No problem!” story. Erin Hamp was working as a waitress and children’s pastor, while Leroy was the lead singer of a heavy-metal band.
They wanted to improve their family’s financial situation and so they began looking at franchising options. Leroy went to work for a Chem-Dry floor cleaning franchise in their Beavercreek, Ohio, home, to learn the business. By 2017 they were partnering with the owners to learn how to operate a Chem-Dry franchise, and on Jan. 1, 2018, they became full owners of the business, which serves Montgomery and Greene Counties.
An opportunity for more family time, schedule control
The Hamps recently sat down with Franchise Wire to tell their story. For the Hamps, who now have five children, it was about something they could do for their family, and as a family. They now can schedule appointments around family events, and they’ve been able to hire Leroy’s mother as a nanny so they can free up weekdays for jobs.
“We decided in the beginning to have only Monday-through-Friday bookings, so Saturday is our family day. On Sundays we do church and activities,” Erin told Franchise Wire. “We also wanted to support the families that work for us and give them weekends off.”
Using the available tools helped grow the business
Right away, the Hamps put the ongoing training and support that Chem-Dry offers franchise owners to work. In their first year they focused on adding employees, as well as learning new products and services and upgrading their equipment. In 2019 they attended Chem-Dry’s annual franchise owner convention, leaving with a wealth of advice. Those early moves have paid off for them, Erin Hamp says.
“We had a few other franchisees take us under their wings and show us how they ran their businesses,” she says, adding that they also “started on Chem-Dry’s Track CRM [customer relationship management] software, which was a game-changer. We were so much more professional and could track things way better. We also upped our SEO [search engine optimization] and PPC [pay per click]. We tried new marketing ventures with Valpak,” and we improved customer service, Erin says. “By May 2019 we saw a huge improvement and ended the year with about 24% growth.”
